Supporting Children with Sensory Processing Difficulties
Does your child exhibit behaviors like covering their ears, avoiding certain textures, or showing heightened sensitivity to clothing tags? Are there situations where your child becomes overwhelmed or distressed by sensory stimuli such as bright lights or loud noises? Have you noticed any challenges in your child’s ability to transition between different sensory environments or adapt to changes in routine?
These signs are commonly associated with sensory processing difficulties in children.
Sensory processing difficulties can significantly impact a child’s life, affecting their ability to concentrate, learn and thrive in various environments.
We’re here to help you navigate these challenges and support your child’s development.

Meet Ciara
Ciara is a 7-year-old girl who has been experiencing challenges with sensory processing. Sensory processing refers to the way our nervous system receives and interprets sensory information from the environment. Typically children with Sensory processing difficulties are “Sensory Seekers” or “Sensory Avoiders”. Ciara seeks movement (it helps to regulate her) and loves the swing in the playground – loves it so much that she needs to be bribed to come off it!

Restless beginnings
Ciara has always found the world loud – she gets upset at birthday parties and will always leave the room when the singing starts. When a bus or a motorbike drives by you can see her tensing up and her hands go up to cover her ears.
Discovering Cluas
At Cluas we developed a Sound Therapy program specifically for Ciara. This stimulation program provided Ciara with the Sensory input that she craved in order for her to become more regulated. This also helped to develop her sensory processing, allowing it to become more balanced and regulated.
As her sensory system became more developed her parents reported how at a recent birthday party she was the one trying to blow out the candles much to everyone’s amusement and she was also able to stay playing with the other children in the play centre for much longer than she was previously.
Her teacher has mentioned how she appears much calmer in class – not standing up and walking around or jigging constantly in her chair. Her teacher feels she is able to pay more attention and has noted that she is more available for learning and feels that she will catch up quickly.
