How can we help? Children

How can we help?

As a first main step Cluas carry out an individual assessment specifically with a view to establishing whether a Cluas programme would be of benefit to a child. Normally an assessment can be organised to take place within a few weeks.

How do parents arrange for an assessment and a program for their child?

Parents can simply phone or email us or complete the enquiry form below to learn more about the Cluas Programme and to speak with one of our team, so that we can learn more about your child. Then, if you are happy to do so, we can arrange an assessment at our Dublin Centre for your child.

Assessment at Cluas

After contacting Cluas you will be given an appointment for an assessment. At this appointment we will assess your child’s Auditory Processing, listening, developmental profile and discuss personal history. The purpose of the appointment is to assess your child’s suitability for a program, it does not provide you with a formal diagnosis.

Using the information gathered at the initial assessment, an individualised Cluas programme is designed for your child. Following the assessment we will discuss with you the best options for your child. If a programme is recommended and agreed with you, we will review with you the possibility of providing the programme at home or your child attending at the Cluas Centre in Dublin. See information about the Cluas @ Home programme and also Our Centre Based Approach.

What happens next?

A programme would generally take place in the three stages over a period of approximately three months at home or if it is possible for you at the Cluas Centre in Dublin.

When a programme starts, your child will listen to music recordings through headphones. The properties of these recordings are modified by specialized sound equipment, which has been programmed according to the personal programme that has been designed for your child.

We supply a detailed programme of activities and information on sources of materials to enable you to more easily implement the programme.  This will help you organise different activities. These activities are designed to help your child develop – and make the daily 2 hour session enjoyable for your child.  We will provide a Parent’s Guide giving you guidelines and ideas for the activities.

A standard Cluas programme consists of three phases:

We will discuss and agree with you the timing in your daily routine that will best suit you and your child for the delivery of the Cluas programme.

Your child’s progress and development will be regularly monitored and formally re-assessed at the beginning and end of each stage, the results of which will be discussed with you.

For some children, including children with autism, a number of extra stages of the Cluas Program may be recommended as beneficial for a child. The need for this extended program is usually apparent to us at the time of the initial assessment.

At the consultation meeting at the end of stage 3, recommendations for follow-up and review and possible further stages will be made, where appropriate.
